Sunday’s Music – Stalling, Cleveland and Corritore

Well my emusic downloads refreshed the other day and I have been checking the new stuff they’ve added in the last month. It seems that they’ve added a lot of new stuff from Rounder Records so a lot of new folk albums. So did I download any of thing  from Rounder? No I did not. I download three albums: Max Stalling’s  new album Home To You, Michael Cleveland’s  album Flamethrower from 2002 and Bob Corritore and Friends album Harmonica Blues. I’ve been a Max Stalling fan for a while and have four albums in my collection. The first and probably…

Blues Wednesday – Dave Hole, John Hurt and Bill Morrissey

So while I didn’t find any new blues artist today I did listen to some old favorites. First I listened to one of my favorite blues artists Australian slide guitarist Dave Hole. I listened to his most recent release on Blind Pig Records Rough Diamond. I’ve listened to this album several times and each time I like it a little more. The eleven tracks on the album are a mix of Hole originals and songs from composers that Dave has wanted to record. and on all of them Dave’s slide guitar is great as usual! Whether it’s a slow tune…

Blues Wednesday – Albert Cummings

So today on Blues Wednesday I listened to an album that I had put on the mp3 player a while ago and haven’t listened to for a bit. But as soon as I heard the opening track “Working Man” I remembered how much I liked  Albert Cumming’s 2006 release Working Man. I think I came across Albert’s music on emusic where I read a review by Megan Frye of the All Music Guide. A excerpt from that review: Often compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan for the tone and explosive improvisation style the two share, Albert Cummings’ Working Man sees the…

Blues Wednesday – Mitch Kashmar – Raoul & the Big Time

So today on Blues Wednesday I found two names on the Roots Music Report Blues Chart that looked interesting. The first was Mitch Kashmar and the Pontiax and their new album 100 Miles to Go on Delta Groove Records, and the second was Raoul and the Big Time and their album Blue Midnight: A Live Tribute to Little Walter. I assumed that Raoul was a harp player from the Little Walter Tribute, but what I didn’t know was that Mitch Kashmar was a harp player, too. Rhapsody didn’t have the new Mitch Kashmar album so I listened to his 2008…

Blues Wednesday- A Day Late-Albert Castigilia

Ok so, we’re at The College of William and Mary sweating and moving my daughter into her new dorm room on the third floor with no air conditioning and thankfully we’re done! Yesterday was the trip down and tomorrow the trip back a little bit of music listening! The one blues album that I did listen to was the soon to be released album by Albert Castiligia pronounced (“ka-STEEL-ya)” Keepin’ On. I had never heard Albert’s music until the other day when I turned on the Blues station on XM Radio and they were playing some tracks from an XM…

Bingo! – The Steve Miller Band

So today I went again to the construction site in Voorhees for the new Virtua Hospital to observe the installation of underground stone columns. The columns are designed to make the ground more stable during an earthquake. So I had the player on shuffle on the way over and back. A good mix from all the music I’ve listened to over the last several weeks was playing a little Gold Heart, The Devil Makes Three, Killbilly, Tommy Castro and then I heard a voice from the past and I had forgotten that I had downloaded his new album actually his…

Thursday Mix leads to Jimmy Thackery

Ok so today was a mixed up day! It started by listening to some more Big Daddy “O” but instead of listening to the album What You Gotta Go Through that I listened to yesterday, I couldn’t resist the title of another of Big Daddy’s albums, which was Deranged Covers. Which ironically is an album of covers but far from being Deranged they are really good! The opening track is a good cover of “Crossroads”. Other tracks include: “Built for Comfort”, “Stormy Weather”, “Autumn Leaves”, and really nice covers of “Just Dropped In”, and “A Song for You”. All of…

Blues Wednesday – Big Daddy “O” and Eddie Turner

So today I really didn’t get a chance to listen to any music. As a matter of fact my headphones were still in my bookbag until a few minutes ago. Anyone I started listening to two albums that seemed pretty good on the first brief listen. The first name I saw on the Roots Music Report Blues Chart was Big Daddy “O” and his new album Used Bluesbu when I went to Rhapsody the new album was no available so I listened to his third album What You Gotta Go Through. Seems that Big Daddy has been playing bars and…

Blues on a Thursday – Daddy Mack Blues Band

So it seems that the Memphis Blues scene may not be what it used to be. In reading about the Memphis Blues scene it seems that before Sun Records signed and recorded Elvis Presley in 1954, the Memphis Blues scene was hopping musicians like Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Nix, Ike Turner, and B.B.King performed on Beale Street and in West Memphis. They recorded some of the classic electric blues, rhythm and blues and rock & roll records. After Presley Sun Records turned it’s attention to a wider white audience. Well today I listened to a band that hails from Memphis and…

Blues Wednesday – Ron Hacker and Arsen Shomakhov

so there’s not a lot of time to write tonight before I conk out so I’ll make this brief and write more later. I have to go to Forked River tomorrow so they’ll be lots of time to listen to and fro’. Anyway there were two names on the Root Music Report Blues Chart today that were unfamiliar to me and sounded interesting Ron Hacker and the Hacksaws and Arsen Shomakhov. Ron Hacker’s album is called Burnin‘ and I really liked it, some nice guitar and the vocals were different and good. Arsen’s album Dangerous was more of a jazz…
