Kevin Selfe and the Tornadoes – Selfe-Contained

Checking the Roots Music Report last night I made a short list of some names that looked interesting and gave them a quick listen the album that caught my attention and I ended up putting on the mp3 player was Selfe-Contained by Kevin Selfe and the Tornadoes. Self-Contained is the band’s first release. Their most recent release Playing the Game is currently No. 41 on the chart down from 39 last week. It only took listening to the first track on Selfe-Contained an instrumental titled “Messing With A Lion” for me to realize that I was going to like this…

Folk Monday – Ernest Troost

So you’re an Emmy winning and multi-nominated Emmy composer so what do you do to change things up? You return to your folk and blues roots and put out two well received albums All Boats Are Going to Rise and Resurrection Blues. Resurrection Blues is number five on the Folk DJ Chart for June 2010. That’s what Ernest Troost has done over the last few years!  Here’s what Ernest Says about his return to his roots at his website: “I had been writing a lot of instrumental music over the past few years in many different styles,” says Troost, “everything…

Blues Wednesday with some Twang!

So I’ve never been a huge Albert Collins fan. I have a cassette of his album Iceman (1991) which has been converted to mp3s. It’s a great album and I love Albert’s guitar playing.  I obviously also have the album Showdown! (1985)  the album Albert did with Robert Cray and Johnny Copeland. That album is a favorite. While I knew Albert had died I didn’t know just when so I was surprised to see as I researched this piece that he died in 1993! About his death from Wikipedia: After falling ill at a show in Switzerland in late July…

Linwood Barclay – Trombone Shorty What a pair!

So tonight I spent most of the nght engrossed in Linwood Barclay;s new book Never Look Away almost half way through and it’s tough to put down! Newspaper reporter David Harwood, his wife Jan and son Ethan are all set to spend a nice family day at the local amusement park Five Mountains. Soon after entering the park David leaves hiswife and son to go get ice cream, Jan looks way for a few minutes and looks back and the stroller and Ethan are gone – frantically Jan and David search the park David finds his son but returning to…

The Blues Rolls into Friday – Peter Parcek3

So on Wednesday when I checked the Roots Music Report Chart there at number 15 sat a name I didn’t recognize (what’s new) Peter Parcek and his new CD The Mathematics of Love so as usual I headed over to Rhapsody and they had the album so on to the player it went. It didn’t take long for me to know that this was an album that I was going to like, the opening track “Showbiz Blues” rocked and when the guitar went from one ear to the other I said oh, yeah! Anyway I have listened to the CD…

The Blues Rolls on into Thursday – Bishop and Parcek

Ok so I don’t know which is moving slower tonight me or the computers! I installed WordPress 3.0 first I lost all my traffic counts for today I know I had more visitors than the 4 it now lists! As for me sometimes a hard run coming after a day of field work knocks me out which is what happened tonight. Anyway I did listen to some blues today! I had put Elvin Bishop‘s new album Red Dog Speaks on the player yesterday. This morning I added The Mathematics of Love by Peter Parcek. Now I’m familiar with Elvin Bishop…

Blues Rock – The Fight Is On

When I checked the Roots Music Blues Chart on Wednesday a name that I had seen for several weeks stood at number 20 Popa Chubby and his current release The Fight is On. So I went to Rhapsody and downloaded the album onto the mp3 player and gave the album a listen. The first thing that I realized was that this is not a traditional blues album but a rock album with blues roots like Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton! Since I knew nothing about Popa Cubby (aka Ted Horowitz)  I’ve read a few reviews and here’s a quote from…

Blues Wednesday – extended version!

So the other day I downloaded two blues albums onto the mp3 player but didn’t really get a chance to listen to them. But yesterday and today I’ve listened to both of them and I have two new bluesmen that will be on the player for a while! I’ll go with age before girth so the first one is Magic Slim and the Teardrops. The album that I listened to was his 2006 release Tin Pan Alley. Now unbeknown  to me Magic Slim (Morris Holt) has been around making great blues albums since the 70s! Sure enough when I look…

Blues Wednesday – Mixed Bag – Cowan, Johnson, Popa!

I know it’s Blues Wednesday but it didn’t start out that way! I really didn’t get a chance to look for any blues this morning so I ended up listening to what was already on the player. One album that caught my attention was John Cowan’s album  8,745 Feet: Live at Telluride so that was the album I listened to first. The album shows Cowan’s voice at his best and includes  songs from his solo albums and a few from his New Grass Revival Days.  Tracks include: “Mississippi Delta Time”, “High Above the Powerlines”,”Let’s Make A Baby King”, “Road To…

Blues Wednesday Delta Moon, Kirk Fletcher and Mannish Boys!

So it isn’t often that I make a list of artists to listen to load up three albums and enjoy them all! Well that’s what happened today. I checked the Living Blues chart for March and April and picked three names I didn’t recognize to give a listen. The three artists and albums (and position on April chart) were Delta Moon – Hellbound Train (20), Kirk Fletcher My Turn (9) and Mannish Boys Shake For Me (2). First up was Delta Moon and Hellbound Train and the title track which opens the albun was enough for me to know that…
