Blues – Grass Wednesday – Leftover Twang – 2

The second band that caught my attention yesterday was Acoustic Endeavors and their album On a Farm. On a Farm is a  2005 release from a band formed by Warren Anderson and Kelly Green in 1992, when they realized they needed an outlet for their music. The band now calls Anderson’s hometown Roanoke, Virginia home. Through the years musicians have shift around the core of Anderson and Green the current line-up consists of: Warren Anderson – bass, mandolin and vocals Kelly Green – guitar and vocals Dewey Peters – guitar John Lawless – banjo and vocals Billy Hurt – fiddle…

Blues-Grass Wednesday – Left Over Twang!

So yesterday I listened to several bits and pieces of albums including most of Stuart Duncan’s 1992 self-titled release which includes some of my favorite fiddle tunes; “Lee’s Highway Blues” and “Whistling Rufus”, along with a lot of other good stuff. I also listened to the second New Grass Revival album Fly through The Country. I did put two albums on the mp3 player for further listening. Both names were taken from the Roots Music Report. The first was Sweet Sunny South whose new album Carried Off by a Twister was at 36 and the other was Acoustic Endeavor whose…

Blues Rock – The Fight Is On

When I checked the Roots Music Blues Chart on Wednesday a name that I had seen for several weeks stood at number 20 Popa Chubby and his current release The Fight is On. So I went to Rhapsody and downloaded the album onto the mp3 player and gave the album a listen. The first thing that I realized was that this is not a traditional blues album but a rock album with blues roots like Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton! Since I knew nothing about Popa Cubby (aka Ted Horowitz)  I’ve read a few reviews and here’s a quote from…

Blues Wednesday – extended version!

So the other day I downloaded two blues albums onto the mp3 player but didn’t really get a chance to listen to them. But yesterday and today I’ve listened to both of them and I have two new bluesmen that will be on the player for a while! I’ll go with age before girth so the first one is Magic Slim and the Teardrops. The album that I listened to was his 2006 release Tin Pan Alley. Now unbeknown  to me Magic Slim (Morris Holt) has been around making great blues albums since the 70s! Sure enough when I look…

Blues Wednesday – Mixed Bag – Cowan, Johnson, Popa!

I know it’s Blues Wednesday but it didn’t start out that way! I really didn’t get a chance to look for any blues this morning so I ended up listening to what was already on the player. One album that caught my attention was John Cowan’s album  8,745 Feet: Live at Telluride so that was the album I listened to first. The album shows Cowan’s voice at his best and includes  songs from his solo albums and a few from his New Grass Revival Days.  Tracks include: “Mississippi Delta Time”, “High Above the Powerlines”,”Let’s Make A Baby King”, “Road To…

Twang Tuesday – Keller and the Kells and more!

So this morning I checked the Roots Music Report and the band that jumped out was Keller and the Keels. I checked emusic and they had their new album Thief and then I had a duh moment when I read that the band was composed of Keller Williams and the Keels (Larry and wife Jenny). Now while I don’t have a Keller Williams in my collection I have heard some of his music on JamOn on XM and have liked it and was going to look him up! So I downloaded the album but didn’t get to put it on…

Folk Monday – Donna Ulisse, Robin Greenstein and Guthrie Kennard

The three albums that I listen to this Folk Monday came from the May Folk DJ Charts and were all names I am unfamiliar with. They were Donna Ulisse, Robin Greenstein and Guthrie Kennard. I will provide just a brief overview now and will write more about each album later as the week progresses! The first album was by Donna Ulisse. The new album currently listed on the DJ Chart is Holy Waters, but looking at the song titles and listening briefly I could tell that the album was a little too gospel for me. So I listened to her…

Blues Wednesday Delta Moon, Kirk Fletcher and Mannish Boys!

So it isn’t often that I make a list of artists to listen to load up three albums and enjoy them all! Well that’s what happened today. I checked the Living Blues chart for March and April and picked three names I didn’t recognize to give a listen. The three artists and albums (and position on April chart) were Delta Moon – Hellbound Train (20), Kirk Fletcher My Turn (9) and Mannish Boys Shake For Me (2). First up was Delta Moon and Hellbound Train and the title track which opens the albun was enough for me to know that…

Twang Tuesday – The Infamous Stringdusters

So today I made a brief list of some bluegrass to listen to and listened to some tracks by Josh Williams not bad but not thrilling. Then I listened to a track from the Tiger Maple String Band interesting but I just wasn’t really into the music. So I finally decided to move the the top of the chart and the number one album Things That Fly by The Infamous Stringdusters and I now know why the album is number one great picking, vocals and lyrics usually make a great album and this album has all three! The album is…

Blues Wednesday – Sean Chambers

So for the last couple of weeks I’ve had Sean Chambers second album Humble Spirits on the mp3 player and have enjoyed it. Sean is a Florida bluesman in the mold of Stevie Ray Vaughan, i.e. blues with a rock edge. Humble Spirits, was produced by Bud Snyder (The Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t Mule), and featured featured such special guests as Bernard Allison, Frankie and Dan Toler (The Allman Brothers), Bobby T. Torello (Johnny Winter) and Greg Allman band alumnus Bruce Waibel. Sean has been ranked in the Top 50 blues rock guitarists by Britain’s “Guitarist Magazine” and he…
