Blues Wednesday – Part 1 – The Insomniacs

Today I listened to three blues albums that I read about last night in the current issue of Blues Revue Magazine. The three albums are At Least I’m Not With You by The Insomniacs. Sean Chambers 2005 release Humble Spirits and Anders Osborne 2010 release American Patchwork. I enjoyed all three albums with the first two being new favorites and the third only listened to once! First up was The Insomniacs At Least I’m Not With You. The Insomniacs hail from Portland, Oregon and play a vintage blues on vintage instruments from Delta Groves website: They play vintage instruments and…

Welcome Back and this AM – Burning Sky!

After two days on the road – six hours plus to Williamsburg on Monday and then pack up my daughters stuff at William and Mary and then six plus hours back yesterday I am back and maybe can even write some stuff today to catch up!! I didn’t really listen to anything new on the trip just listened to a mix of the stuff I already had on the mp3 player! I listened quickly to some different blues musicians last night but couldn’t listen to them this morning as I was doing some writing so I listened to some Native…

Nick Moss – Live at Chan’s – Combo Platter No. 2

So the other day after I listened to Nick Moss’ new CD Privileged I said I was going to go back and listen to some of his other CDs. So today I listened to his album Live at Chan’s – Combo Platter No. 2 and I think I like it more than Privileged. The album is just flat out great! Because the tracks are longer the band gets to stretch a little more and the results are some fantastic tracks, starting with the opening  track “Spare Ribs & Chopsticks” an eight plus minute instrumental featuring the basic band Moss on…

New Friends – Cornmeal!

So the other day, when I was looking up information about Great American Taxi I saw a new music chart at Jambands.com and on that chart at No4 was a band called Cornmeal and their new album Live in Chicago,Il., Vol.1. So I went to Rhapsody to check them out. Rhapsody didn’t have have the new album but did have several others including their 2006 release Feet First. After the first few minutes of the first song “River Gap”, I knew I had another progressive bluegrass band to add to my growing list of new favorites!  These guys and gal…

Quick Pick – Blues Harp – Mark Hummel

So yesterday, I ended the day listening to some of the tracks on Mark Hummel’s album Ain’t Easy No More. An older Hummel album Married to the Blues has been on the CD player for a while now and it is ok but maybe a little too old swingy? Anyway, I liked this album a whole lot more. If you don’t know Hummel, he is on of the most respected blues harp players around. Here are some press quotes from his website and the second quote is from a guy who just may  know a little about the blues. “Every…

Blues Wednesday – Blue Bella Records

So this Blues Wednesday, I didn’t start by checking any charts. I thought that since I had good luck last week with Blue Bella Records I’d just check and see what other bands are on their label with new albums out! What I found were two names first Matthew Stubbs and second The Cash Box Kings. So when I got to work and started work and listening I started with The Cash Box Kings album I-94 Blues. I listened to the first track “Default Boogie” a little boogie number about the current economic conditions! It sounded great but not a…

New Blues – Nick Moss

So Wednesday when I was looking for some new blues and downloaded the Kilborn Alley Blues Band I also downloaded another album on the same label Blue Bella Records, Privileged by Nick Moss. Well I’ve listened to this album many times over the last three days and each time I listen to it I like it more and more and it’s quickly catching up the Kilborn Alley as a new favorite. Before listening to this album I had never heard of Nick Moss and evidently I was missing out on some great Chicago Blues! From his website biography Who is…

Blues Wednesday – Part 1 – The Kilborn Alley Blues Band

So tonight, I was thinking about how to write today’s post about a new group (to me) The Kilborn Alley Blues Band and the album that I listened to first this Blues Wednesday Better Off Now and I thought, what do I like in a blues band. Well, you need a good strong guitar see Stevie Ray, Corey Stevens, Mike Bloomfield any of the guitarist for John Mayall….Kilborn Alley- Josh Stimmel and Andrew Duncannon on guitars sound pretty good to me… maybe you can throw in a little harp see James Cotton, Paul Butterfield,John Mayall, Kim Wilson …. Kilborn Alley…

Twang Tuesday – Justin and the hunt ends??

So the last member of Dan Tyminski’s Band solo album that I listened to today was Justin Moses 2006 release Dusty Roads. Since it is late, I will let someone else tell you about the album. From Justin’s website: “Holy cow! Moses does everything except leap tall buildings in single bound so don’t be surprised to see Moses leap into prominence in the world of bluegrass. He does it all: lead, tenor, and high baritone vocals, mandolin, banjo, guitar, Dobro, and bass. “Dusty Roads” is an energetic recording with fingers flying in all directions and most of the fingers belong…

Twang Tuesday – Adam, Ron and Justin

Ok so it’s Twang Tuesday that means let’s check out the Bluegrass Chart on the Roots Music Report. I checked off several names on the list  that looked promising. One name that stood out  at number six was Adam Steffey, hum do I know that name? I thought I did but I couldn’t quite place him. So I thought let me check Dan Taminski’s site to see if he has anything new. When I went to the site,  I found  out where I knew Steffey from, he played mandolin on Taminski’s Wheels album. I then remembered that I has listened…
