Mary Youngblood – Beneath the Raven Moon

Mary Youngblood – Native American Flute – Beneath the Raven Moon   So one of the other types of music that I listen to at work when background music without lyrics is needed or at times of stress is American Native Flute. My favorite artist is R. Carlos Nakai. I also listen to Robert Tree Cody and Douglas Spotted Eagle. One artist who I have listened to a little is Mary Youngblood , but the other day I downloaded onto the mp3 player her 2002 release Beneath the Raven Moon and I have a new Native American flutist to listen…

More Jazz -New Vibes – Steve Hobbs – Spring Cycle

So I spent this evening multitasking , with part of me watching the Phils squeak one out against the Diamondbacks, another part reading C.J. Box’s new book Nowhere to Run and part of me still looking for new jazz musicians (at least to me). This time I was looking for new vibraphonists! Last night I was looking for young vibes players and came across Stefon Harris and Blackout and I listened to some of their album Urbanus. Liking what I heard I was planning on listening to the whole album tonight, but in true Edward fashion I looked back at…

Saturday Quick Pick – organissimo

So the other day I was thinking about the jazz that I listen to and the title of an older  Milt Jackson album  popped into my head Ain’t But a Few of Us Left. Which made me think, who are the new jazz artists out there making the type of jazz I like who are the younger Milt Jacksons, Jimmy Smiths and Wes Montgomerys? So I went to the Roots Music Chart for jazz and looked down the chart and there at number 16 sat an interesting band name organissimo. The album listed was Alive and Kickin’. So then I…

Eric Bibb – Booker’s Guitar

Ok so, Eric Bibb is another of those artists who music I don’t have in my library simply because, say it with me now!  there’s too much music – too little time! Generally. I don’t listen to a lot of acoustic blues no Keb’ Mo’  or Reverend Gary Davis in my library, there is however, Mississippi John Hurt, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry and one of my favorite Bill Morrissey album’s is Songs of Mississippi John Hurt. Oh and I forgot my new friends Moreland and Arbuckle! Anyway yesterday after listening to some different? acoustic blues Seasick Steve I wanted…

Blues Wednesday Mix!

So usually on Blues Wednesday I find one artist or album and listen to it enough write a  review but today I don’t think I listened to CDs enough to know how I really feel about them! I started the day by checking Billboard’s Blues Chart and the name that jumped out was Seasick Steve (Steven Gene Wold) and his album Man From Another Time. Wold plays acoustic blues on a variety of homemade instruments and the result is well different and I think it’s going to take several listens until I know how I feel about the album in…

Twang Tuesday – Part 2

Ok so near the end of work today, I was listening to Rhapsody and I saw a band whose name sounded interesting Greensky Bluegrass labeled as progressive bluegrass so I put on their current release Five Interstates. As I was working I was noticing that the music that was playing was REALLY GOOD – loved the dobro and mandolin and the vocals sounded great!!  So I listened to several of the songs and was really impressed so of course I said I’ll try another of the CDs! So I downloaded the album Live at Bells listened to the first track…

Twang Tuesday – Part 1

So today has been a good Twang Tuesday full of lots of good music! The day started with one of the albums I picked up the other night Lou Reid and Carolina’s current release My Own Set of Rules. You know it’s going to be a good day when you just love the first song that you hear and that’s what happened when I started this album up and heard the first track “Amanda Lynn”. I just thought that the voice sounded right and the pickin’ was great, too. Since then I’ve gone to their website and discovered that “Amanda…

Good Vibes from Gary Burton!

So last night I mentioned that I love the vibraphone and the three musicians that I’ve listen to the most are Gary Burton, Milt Jackson and Cal Tjader. I love all three  and probably in the order I listed. I’ve also listened to Bobby Hutcherson and Walt Dickinson and like them also. Here is a video of Gary Burton and Makoto Ozone (see Thursday Mix Part 2) – doing a Cal Tjader song “Afro Blue”  A version of that song can be found on my favorite Gary Burton CD For Hamp, Red, Bags, and Cal You can learn more…

Blues Wednesday – Eugene Hideaway Bridges

So tonight I am listening to an album that I downloaded a while back but I like the tracks more each time I hear them. The album is Live in San Antonio Special Edition by Eugene Hideaway Bridges. Right now the track ” I Know You Love Me” just finished and that was a great one, one that features the whole band and that would include: Bass Eric King,  Drums Bobby Baranowski, Keyboards & Organ David Webb, (who stands out on several tracks), Tenor Sax Seth Kibel and Trumpet Justine Miller. From the opening track  “I Got the Blues” this…

Twang Tuesday – Part 1 – Red Molly

So what do you get when you put together three super talented women with great voices and musicianship? You get a group whose new CD James is No. 10 on the Americana Music Chart and #1 on the Folk-DJ chart for March! That group would be Red Molly! Individually, they are Laurie MacAllister (vocals, bass, banjo and guitar), Abbie Gardner (vocals, dobro and guitar) and Carolann Solebello (vocals, guitar, bass and mandolin) and together, as they say they make beautiful  music. I first heard Red Molly last year when they were playing cuts on The Village on XM Radio from their album Love…
