Today in Music – Nov 26, 1983 – Happy Birthday, Guy Buttery!!

Guy Buttery

I love checking list of people who have birthday on that day’s date, especially the list at All About Jazz. The list has led to my discovery of many artist that were previously unknown to me!! Yesterday such as I was introduced to the music of Daseul Kim and now today I have discovered a really great acoustic guitar player Guy Buttery. A quick listen to his most recent release told me that this musician from South Africa will soon have a spot in my music library. I will try to write more later, but for now here’s what some folks say about Guy’s music!!

… his music has a subtle grace and power all of its own. Though his technical prowess is also bewildering, Buttery immerses himself entirely into the soul of his guitar, coaxing sonic shapes and forms of such startling originality that his instrument acts as a kind of lightning conductor for the sound of another realm.”
– Mail & Guardian

Buttery’s avant-garde world music is exceptionally beautiful – from composition to technique to atmospherics. “Fox Hill Lane” is one of the most adventurous acoustic recordings in recent memory.”

So let’s have some lunchtime music from Guy and Nibs van der Spuy – “Trambicosa” Oh and by the way Happy Birthday Guy!”
